Is celebrity news even news anymore??
Let me be the first to admit that I am a big fan of online journalism, more specifically celebrity news. I like reading about read carpets and who-got-married-to-who and so on. However a line has to be drawn about what’s actual news versus what’s a post made to gain likes.
From browsing through an average scroll on my Facebook feed, I’m bombarded with more “celebrity news” than I can handle or actually want to read. I call these posts “news”, but I can’t consider them that at all. Recently, I found a post titled something along the lines of “This Demi Lovato Makeup-less selfie will GIVE YOU LIFE.” Okay. I’m down for women empowerment and not needing makeup to make you feel beautiful – that’s all good and fine. But, at the end of the day, it’s just another girl taking another selfie, this time without the heavy layers of foundation. I can do that too; we all can. It’s not news.
I feel like in today’s fast-paced society, the idea of getting a story out is more important than what that story actually is. Oftentimes, news outlets post literally anything to stay relevant. However, most of these outlets just end up looking dumb because most of their published content is just stuffing. The issue with stuffing is that it’s hard to tell the difference between that and what you actually should read. All the news gets jumbled and it becomes a motonous bur of Kim Kardashian and baby photos.
A note on baby photos – is it really BREAKING NEWS that there’s now a photo of some celeb’s kid?
I know this sounds cynical, but with the hyperbolic titles and lackluster content, the world of online journalism as viewed through a Facebook feed is declining at a rapid pace – it’s time for fewer articles that are more well throughout-out. It’s time for a cleaner feed, am I right?
